Vincent Ward: The Wizard of NZ

Visionary filmmaker Vincent Ward hasn’t received his due - though no career that includes such wondrous curiosities as Map of the Human Heart and What Dreams May Come can be considered malnourished. It’s more that Ward’s brilliant, original, evocative, spectacularly cinematic movies demand to be seen on the big screen, and audiences don’t get the chance to see them that way very often these days. That’s doubly-true for Ward’s first two features, Vigil (1984) and The Navigator (1988), both made in his native New Zealand, even though these were the movies that caught the eye and the imagination of Hollywood’s talent-spotters.
